Basics of Celona MicroSlicing for Private Cellular

Celona’s patented MicroSlicing technology allows granular allocation of private cellular resources to groups of apps and devices.

Mobile networks play an essential role in everyday life, with phones and laptops utilizing it whenever Wi-Fi is not easily found. In today’s day and age, network connectivity can sometimes be overlooked due to its availability and accessibility almost everywhere you go.

However, with the advancement of technology on devices that both individuals and enterprises use, the demands for more efficient and adaptable mobile networks continue to grow. Celona MicroSlicing, a patented technology developed by Celona, is the response that is pushing innovation forward to create a more intelligent and flexible private mobile network and to provide connected devices and apps with predictable performance when on private cellular.

What is Celona MicroSlicing and how does it work?

Micro Slicing is a groundbreaking technology that allows precise control over resource and service allocation for different groups of applications and devices.

Celona MicroSlicing: How Does It Work?

Network administrators can use Celona Orchestrator or its developer APIs to customize the network settings by a device or application specific basis. It offers control and adjustments to numerous service types, including data throughput, quality, latency, reliability, and network access policies among others.

This allows the user to set aside guaranteed portions of the network dedicated to the smooth functioning of the respective device and application groups. Every Celona MicroSlicing policy created can be tracked and monitored by the enterprise within the Celona Orchestrator allowing for adjustments to be made instantly when necessary.

The platform also records application specific service level agreements (SLA) and key performance indicators (KPI) across all devices, granting the user full visibility of device performance across the spectrum.

How does MicroSlicing compare to 5G Network Slicing?

The current technology being used by other mobile network companies is 5G Network Slicing, which offers a similar, albeit less customizable, service. Employed by companies like Ericsson and Nokia, network slicing issues set portions of the network for specific enterprise sites and locations - instead of customizable set of device groups and applications. What's prioritized in the enterprise network can be a single set of devices, supporting a single set of critical applications with same SLA metrics - in other words, very limiting in its ability to future proof private mobile network deployments.

While innovative in its own rights, network slicing falls short of Micro Slicing in terms of its optimization and precision when it comes to optimizing traffic flows and overall network performance on a per device and application basis.

Celona MicroSlicing: How Is It Different From Network Slicing?

Via service providers, public mobile networks can utilize network slicing to allocate resources based on the type of industry or service of an enterprise. For example, network slicing would be used to separate certain mobile bandwidth for a hospital and its devices, whereas another portion would be created for a manufacturing compound and its device applications.

With MicroSlicing, administrators gain the option to take this idea one step further: and apply policies for unique set of devices and applications within a single enterprise. These advancements in precision and operation capability allow MicroSlicing to be more effective than network slicing within an enterprise environment where there is constant change in the use of multiple generation of mobile devices, IoT infrastructure and critical applications.

Why does MicroSlicing matter to your organization?

Celona MicroSlicing has been designed to accelerate private LTE / 5G wireless deployments within the enterprise - and as a result, enable enterprises to control costs for customers while also guaranteeing greater flexibility and efficiency. Since this technology grants control over network resources, customers can avoid deploying more resources than needed to devices that only use a fraction of its potential.

Eliminating over provisioning reduces overall resource requirements, allowing customers to dedicate more financial resources into new generation of digital initiatives.

Celona MicroSlicing: What Are The Customer Benefits?

By providing customers full control on configuration updates to MicroSlicing policies, Celona's solution architecture enables network administrators to change service levels across device groups and applications whenever required. Combined with Celona’s ecosystem of mobile network hardware and software, MicroSlicing opens the door for faster innovation for application development and delivery on private mobile networks.
